EarthBox Container Gardening

Okay, I confess – this might be me already trying to find ways to take shortcuts in my mission to garden. But, as I was reading my latest backyard gardening book, the author mentioned his various experiments from ground to greenhouse and the EarthBox was one of them. It has a certain appeal.

I’ve only just started thinking about what growing a garden in our yard will entail, and so I’m new to the idea of soil testing. And here’s the thing, I’m a little bit afraid to learn what’s in my soil. We’re at the bottom of a high density neighborhood and up the road from a naval shipyard that specializes in nuclear submarines. I’m pretty sure there are plenty of soil tests happening all around us all the time that show everything is fine, but that doesn’t stop my imagination from running a little wild.

With an EarthBox we’d use someone else’s dirt! No testing required, one step permanently crossed off the To Do List. The EarthBox proclaims itself to be ultimate in container gardening using an underground watering system and coming equipped with a fancy array of accessories. There’s even an organic option. Plus, online shopping! My favorite.

Will I add it to my list of very likely possibilities to ensure success in the coming growing season? You bet. Will I stop there? Oh boy, I hope not. But it’s nice to think that I could still have something other than a pot of tomatoes or a tiny row of herbs without the use of a backhoe.
